Reading broadens the imagination, exercises your brain, and is one of the best tools to build learning and understanding of vocabulary. As educators, we aspire to inspire a generation of students who love to read. And as you retain more information when you read, then discuss, then teach others - your reading comprehension exercises are working to do just that.
We've once again partnered with Cathy Henry from Free Word Work and The Curriculum Corner to put together a lesson plan that works great for distance or hybrid learning, and helps students in 1st-3rd grade work on identifying parts of a story, or summarizing what they've read. Introducing - our Rainbow Summary Lesson Plan.
In this activity, you'll choose a book for the whole class to read, either aloud or independently, then lead a group discussion about its characters, setting, plot, conflict, and so on. This can be done with the large group raising hands to contribute, or smaller divided groups in your classroom. Once completed, you'll ask students to concisely summarize the book.
You'll then expand the lesson for independent learning (or as homework) to encourage students to complete the exercise with another book, on their own.
Complete with instructions for the group lesson, a description of the activity for family-involved learning at home, and a template to work from, we know you'll recognize and appreciate the simplicity and effectiveness of this helpful classroom activity!
Create a poster for group discussion using templates from the VariQuest Design Center's Engage Every Learner® Content
Write student answers on the poster to engage them in participation as you lead the discussion, or make multiple posters for students working in groups
Scan and shrink the poster down to folder-size for a take-home learning support and study aid
And that's not all the VariQuest Visual and Kinesthetic Learning Suite can do - request a no-obligation demonstration of our tools to see live how you could save lots of time and solve other challenges at your school with our suite designed for educators, by educators.
